i am think of starting a small home-based online business, i will buy a server, but do i need a web host, or do i register a domain and point it at my server?

However, if you don%26#039;t already know how to register a domain and point it at a server, you really shouldn%26#039;t be buying a webserver. If you want to put up a website, even a complicated website with lots of pages, maybe e-commerce stuff, etc, all you need is a %26quot;virtual webserver%26quot;. That means for a small price you rent space on someone else%26#039;s webserver and build your webpage there. When you register for a virtual server, many companies can also take care of the domain registration and pointing of the name servers all at one time. Try www.godaddy.com. Think running a web server on a home DSL line is a good idea?

I use a popular dsl distributor that blocks port 80. However, I%26#039;ve been using port re-directing. Its worked great so far for my small sites. But do you think a dsl line is good enough to host business sites? Are there any laws against it,, etc....

There are no laws against it, but chances are if you read your ISP%26#039;s policies it%26#039;s prohibited by them. So if they catch you then they could terminate your service.

Beyond that, it%26#039;s not a great idea anyhow. Maybe you only get a few hits a day and that%26#039;s fine for now, but I did this long ago and had a single popular link go up and my connection was unusable and my server crashed. Plus, hosting accounts start at around $3 a month for the basics. You%26#039;ll get far more than what you%26#039;d have at home and you%26#039;ll free up all the traffic on your DSL line.

Besides, servers are targeted for viruses far more than personal machines and even basic bot crawling can suck up a lot of bandwidth on your line.

no laws against hosting a server using DSL. It really depends on how much traffic you think you%26#039;re going to get to your site. If you get a lot, you may want to upgrade you access technology or host with a shared hosting company.
Reply:Read your terms of service. If your ISP is blocking port 80 running a webserver at home is probably a violation.
Reply:You have to think about the uploads on your DSL connection. How many people are you going to have visiting your site? What is your upload 640k....is that enough to support that traffic.

Hi there, I have to do this assignment. Basically ive been asked to suggest suitable technologies for building a intranet for a small size business (40 employees) with connection to Internet.

The business is an internet travel agency - selling holiday packages. So far I have established...that The company will require a Ethernet using either a Star-bus topology, routers,a high speed internet connection, and could either host its webpage using a web host service, or purchase a webserver to host it in-house. The latter one is the dearer option, requiring expertise etc..but I have not been given any budget so I just might suggest it.

MY QUESTION - for the booking the packages..i guess I need a secure payment solutionthat customers can make their payment through. If I buy such a solution externally, how would the storage and transfer of customer details/booking work? And where would you suggest storing it - have a in-house database?

You could use a online payment method such as paypal to accept the payments. It is quite cheap to use and you pay fees on the amounts you recieve.

To store the users details you would need a DBMS such as MYSQL or MS Access. You would also need a scripting language to work with the DBMS such as PHP or ASP.

These could both be implemented with the use of paypal.

If you get an external solution, then you need a SSL certificate which is used to encypt the customer/transcation information over the net. So the information will not be compromised. For the storage, I would suggest using a mySQL database.

You should suggest use of on online merchant, these take the responsibility of storing payment details, the will be responsible for ensuring they keep upto date with any security issues. Most will be able to give you a page that sits within your own website for payment and will take any details you need to send to them such as customer number, invoce reference etc. They then take the credit card details and send back to you a transaction reference number and details as to whether the payment failed or was successful thiscan be stored in any database you choose. Though in this instyance to reduce your costs a PHP/MySQL on Apache solution would be ideal. You will also get a secure website you can log into to review any payments taken by the provider and the ability to do refunds etc.

I am creating a website for my small business and I%26#039;m not very web savvy. So I got a basic monthly package through Yahoo Small Business, and frankly their web design package isn%26#039;t that good. I%26#039;ve found another company I like better, and they told me I should %26quot;point%26quot; my registered domain name to them for hosting. How do I do this? And if I do, will I end up paying both Yahoo and the new company a monthly fee? I would appreciate answers from anyone who is experienced with this.

You have to change the DNS servers to point to the new host and they should propagate within 24-48 hours.

You terminate the hosting with Yahoo and go with the new host. I%26#039;ve done this with a few of my sites, so this is pretty easy stuff to do. Sometimes the host will do it for you, mine did at least.

Heart Internet: reselling hosting space and template websites, does it make money?

has anyone made big money from reselling heart internet or equivilent websites using their web builder plus software? I am looking to work as a web designer for local small to medium businesses. Also, if anybody is, how much are you charging for the monthly hosting?

Just selling layouts (no back end coding) is by no means going to provide enough money.

Hosting, varies from company to company, and it also depends on the facilities provided. I pay around 21euro/year (domain name included).

As for web design: if you design a php powered e-commerce website with around 5 pages, you can charge around 150 euro.

But just the client side coding (HTML , CSS and Javascript) is not enough to be payed decently.
